BEAUMONT, Texas –
Jayne Sepulveda drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to help Lamar University softball to a 2-1 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. This gave the Cardinals the series victory after splitting Friday's doubleheader.
After reaching on an error in the top of the first,
Shenita Tucker got the Cardinals on the board first by stealing home. Her two stolen bases in the inning pushed her season total to 25 stolen bases tying the all-time single season record for Lamar.
Both teams found themselves locked in a pitcher's duel for the rest of the contest as
Emma Wardlaw did not allow a hit after the second inning. Big Red would get runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings but found themselves still engaged in a 1-0 affair.
The Islanders would load the bases in the top of the seventh with one out as they attempted to rally. After a fielder's choice, a groundout was overturned into an RBI infield single which tied the game at a run apiece.
Karyana Mitchell would then secure the final out of the inning to get out of the jam.
LU loaded the bases themselves with no outs in the bottom of the seventh after two singles and a hit batter. Sepulveda then drew a walk on a full count as the winning run crossed the plate for the Cardinals.
Kalie Amos and
Aubrey Brown each recorded two hits for the Cardinals while Sepulveda and
Makenzie Wright each tallied doubles.
Emma Wardlaw got the start on the mound pitching five innings of one-hit ball allowing just one walk.
Karyana Mitchell recorded the win after two innings of relief allowing a run on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
LU hits the road for a midweek matchup at Houston on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before returning home for an all-Cardinals series against Incarnate Word next weekend. All games will be streamed on ESPN+.
