BEAUMONT, Texas – Mother Nature proved she was not a baseball fan Tuesday evening forcing Lamar University and Stephen F. Austin to move their game from Tuesday evening to Wednesday after storms that hit the area but the two teams got the game played and Lamar walked away with the 7-2 victory.
Although the two teams played three individual contests this season, the Cardinals took all three games by a combined 23-6 score.
The Cardinals recorded their seven runs on 13 hits and overcame one error on the afternoon. Lamar did its damage with three runs in the first, two in the fourth and one run in the fifth and seventh innings.
SFA scored their two runs on seven hits and were hurt by four costly errors. Both of the Lumberjacks' runs came in the top of the ninth.
Nine different Cardinals collected hits Wednesday led by multi-hit efforts from
Tanner Wilson (2-for-4, RBI),
River Orsak (2-for-3, BB, 2 runs),
Zak Skinner (2-for-4, RBI, 2 runs) and
Ethan Ruiz (2-for-4, RBI, run). The 3 – 6 hitters in the Cardinals' lineup went 8-for-15 on the day with a walk, five runs scored and three RBIs.
Lamar sent eight players to the mound with
Trhea Morse getting the start. Morse gave the Cardinals 2.0 scoreless with five strikeouts and just one walk. He was relieved in the third inning
Travis Phelps. As a staff, the Cardinals finished the game with six strikeouts while holding SFA to a .212 batting average.
Morse was on a predetermined pitch count to qualify for the win and improves to 3-0 on the season.
Skyler Jaco got the start on the mound for SFA and went 3.0 innings but struggled in the first. He finished the day allowing three runs on four hits and was the unfortunate recipient of one of SFA's errors as all three of his runs were unearned.
With runners on first and second and two outs in the bottom of the first, a balk was called on Jaco allowing Evans and
River Orsak to move up 90 feet.
Zak Skinner then sent a ball down to third but an errant through pulled the first basemen off the bag allowing both runs to score. Ruiz then took the second pitch he saw to center scoring the third run of the game.
With a three-run lead to start the game, the pitching staff did the rest holding SFA at bay until Lamar could tack on more runs, which would come with another crooked number in the fourth.
The Cardinals (26-6) return to action Friday when they open a key three-game series against Southeastern Louisiana. The first game of the conference series is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. from Vincent-Beck Stadium.
