NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Lamar University women's tennis team had to wait a few extra days to get the Southland Conference portion of their schedule under way due to consecutive rain outs over the weekend, but the Cardinals were back on the court Wednesday. Unfortunately, LU dropped a close tilt to the Privateers, 4-3, in the Big Easy.
After falling behind 2-0 (with losses in doubles and at No. 1 singles), the Red and White came storming back with three straight points coming from the Nos. 3-5 singles positions. Sophomore
Megan Do started the run with her straight-sets victory at the No. 3 position defeating UNO's Tristanne Dechoux, 6-1, 6-0. Moments later, junior
Elena Rubio followed suit with a near identical decision over the Privateers' Kateryna Kalistratova, 6-1, 6-1.
With the match knotted up at 2, freshman
Natalia Turczuk handed the Cardinals their first lead of the day. While her match was a little closer, Turczuk still recorded the win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Lamar now needed just one more win from either court 2 or 6 for the overall victory but came up short on both ends.
The Cardinals (6-4/0-1 Southland) will step away from conference play Sunday to face UTEP. The match against the Miners will begin at noon from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
