Cardinals Take Advantage of Lumberjack Errors in Homestand Finale

BEAUMONT, Texas – In the finale of a seven-game homestand, Lamar University softball captured their sixth win in that span with a 4-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday at the LU Softball Complex. This marks the team's ninth win in their last ten games as they gear up for conference play this weekend.

The Lumberjack threatened out of the gate by loading the bases in the top of the first inning, but Karyana Mitchell forced a foul out and strikeout to get out of the jam. LU would break through in the bottom of the third as Shenita Tucker would score from a throwing error after a sacrifice fly from Jayne Sepulveda. SFA would answer back in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout to even things up at one.

LU was able to get the lead back in the bottom of the fourth from more errors by the Lumberjacks. Two runs scored on a throwing error from an Aubrey Brown grounder while she would score later in the inning on a wild pitch. Again though, SFA would cut into the deficit with a two-run triple in the top of the fifth before Mitchell got out of the inning with a groundout.

The Cardinals attempted to widen their lead but failed to make some more damage on the scoreboard. Emma Wardlaw would relieve Mitchell in the sixth inning and managed to record the final six outs without allowing a hit to pick up the save and secure the victory for Big Red.

Tucker recorded her team-leading eighth multi-hit game with two singles on the evening. She also notched two stolen bases to push her season total to 15. Cameron Niedenthal and Brooke Davis each grabbed a hit as well. Mitchell got the win on the mound after five innings of work allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts. Wardlaw picked up her first save of her career with two hitless innings of relief to finish things off.

LU is back on the road this weekend as they travel west to take on Houston Christian in their conference opener. The series starts with a Friday doubleheader with games at 4 and 6 p.m. while the final game will take place on Saturday at 12 p.m.
