BEAUMONT, Texas – It was another pitchers' duel at Vincent-Beck Stadium but unfortunately the roles were reversed Saturday as UT Arlington rallied for three unanswered runs in their last two at-bats to defeat the Cardinals, 3-1, at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Mavericks scored two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, after the Cardinals took the first lead of the game with a solo run in the fourth.
Senior
Brooks Caple (1-2) pitched well enough to get the win Saturday going 7.1 innings allowing just two runs on three hits with eight strike outs and only one walk. He was nearly unhittable as UTA got a leadoff single to open the game and that was their lone baserunner until a leadoff hit in the eighth.
It was the eighth inning where the Mavs finally broke through and pushed Caple from the game. After a hit and a walk, Caple was lifted for
Kyle Moseley with one out in the inning. Moseley struck out the lone batter he faced before LU (6-4) turned things over to
Andres Perez who got the save in Friday's contest. Unfortunately, UTA got a two-out hit to take the lead – both runs were charged to Caple – and never looked back.
The Mavericks tacked on an insurance run in the ninth inning.
The Mavericks' Caylon Dygert (1-1) pitched a complete game to get the win. He allowed one run on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts in his 9.0 innings of work.
Five different Cardinals collected a hit Saturday with junior
Zak Skinner driving in the Cardinals' run with an RBI double in the fourth inning.
The Cardinals will look to take the rubber game of the series when they return to the field Sunday to close out the series against UT Arlington. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. first from Vincent-Beck Stadium and will be televised on ESPN+.
