THIBODAUX, La. – It took Lamar University and Nicholls nearly three weeks to get the match played, but the Cardinals were unfazed by traveling down to Thibodaux to record the 5-2 victory. It was the fifth match in the past nine days for the Cardinals (8-7/1-2 Southland).
Nicholls jumped out to a strong lead taking the doubles point and the first match in singles, but that would be as close to victory as the Colonels could get. The Cardinals got on the board with
Natalia Turczuk's straight-sets victory at the No. 5 spot.
Turczuk's victory sparked a run of five-straight singles wins for Big Red and
Megan Do tied up the match with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Nicholls' Sophia Safarova. Senior
Leah Kuruvilla gave the Cardinals their first lead of the day with a 6-4, 6-3, winner over the Colonels' Liu QianYu at the No. 1 position.
With Kuruvilla's victory, Lamar needed just one more win in the two remaining matches. That victory came from
Elena Rubio at the No. 4 spot as Rubio put away Lea Grinberg in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
The Cardinals will now have four days to prepare for a match against Northwestern State. The match against the Demons is set to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
