Anderson Scores 20, Lamar Advances to SLC Semifinals

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Lamar University junior Terry Anderson scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Cardinals to a 71-57 quarterfinals victory over No. 8 seed New Orleans Monday evening at the Legacy Center. 
 
Anderson was one of two Cardinals (19-13) in double-figures for the Red and White who shot 43 percent from the field (24-of-56). The Cardinals also took full advantage of their opportunities at the free throw line converting 20-of-21 (.952). The Cardinals also held a five-rebound advantage on the glass, 35-30, including 14 offensive rebounds which led to 18 second-chance points.
 
Joining Anderson in double-figures was sophomore Cody Pennebaker who finished the night with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
 
The Privateers got out to a hot start Monday but it didn't last as they finished the game 19-of-48 (.396) on the night, but just 4-of-17 (.235) from three-point range. After knocking down five of their first six attempts, UNO was held to 14 of it final 42.
 
Lamar started the first half slow converting just two of its first 11 and found themselves down 11-4 early (including 0-for-7 start from long range). At the same time UNO opened the game five for its first six but the two teams would flip roles.
 
After forcing consecutive turnovers which led to two LU layups (Chris Pryor and Jakevion Buckley), Lamar trimmed an early seven-point deficit down to two, 13-11. The two defensive plays seemed to switch the momentum of the contest. The Cardinals would go on to hit six of their next nine attempts, while UNO would miss on three consecutive possessions as the Cardinals took a nine-point lead into the into the locker room.
 
The Cardinals closed the half outscoring New Orleans, 30-14, to take a 34-25 advantage into the intermission. 
 
UNO managed to get within two possessions on a couple of occasions in the second half but the Cardinals had an answer. With less than 16 to play, UNO made another brief run to get back within six, but the Red and White responded with a 14-8 run to take a 12-point lead, 56-44, forcing the Privateers to take a timeout. The Cardinals never looked back extending their lead down the stretch.
 
The Cardinals will now get a rematch with rival McNeese Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. from the Legacy Center. It will be broadcast live on Newstalk 560 KLVI and streamed live on ESPNU.
