COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Lamar University returned to Blue Bell Park Tuesday for the first time since its upset of No. 5 Texas A&M last season, but this time the Aggies got the upper hand. Currently ranked seventh nationally, the Aggies recorded a 13-2 victory at Blue Bell Park.
The Cardinals finished the day with five hits including a multi-hit performance from
Brayden Evans (2-for-3, RBI).
Junior
Jackson Cleveland got the start and pitched 2.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits and left the game in a 2-2 time. Cleveland was one of eight Cardinal pitchers to get some work Tuesday.
Peyton Havard (1-2) suffered the loss.
After the Aggies got solo runs in the bottom of the 1
st and 2
nd, Lamar managed cut Texas A&M's second inning short following a great running catch from
River Orsak at the wall. The Cardinals carried that momentum into their next at-bat. Lamar scored two runs on one hit and took advantage of an A&M error (which later was changed to a hit) to pull even at 2 against the nation's seventh-ranked team.
After consecutive walks to lead off the inning,
Brayden Evans came to the plate with runners at the corners and one out. Evans took a 1-0 pitch right back up the middle scoring
Kanin Dodge. Two batters later,
Logan Hamm blasted first pitch he saw by the third baseman to score Orsak.
Unfortunately, the Aggies answered with a leadoff home run in the bottom half of the inning (from Jace LaViolette), and Lamar was unable to recover. The blast sparked a four-run inning as A&M would go on to score 11 runs over the next three frames.
Tuesday marked the end of a stretch of eight-straight on the road for Lamar. The Cardinals now return to Beaumont to open the home portion of their schedule Friday when they face UT Arlington in a three-game series. First pitch for Friday is slated for a 6 p.m. start from Vincent-Beck Stadium.
