TULSA, Okla. – The Lamar University men's team rallied in doubles to take the point and carried that momentum over to singles shutting out Oral Roberts, 4-0, Friday afternoon in Tulsa. The victory, Lamar's second-straight, moves the team to 4-6 (.400) on the season.
With their backs against the wall in doubles, the Cardinals fought their way out of a corner to secure the point. Juniors
Max Amling and
Haruki Omori-Cowie fought off five match points to battle back and defeat Oral Roberts' Ricardo Filho and Gustavo Pinho, 7-6 (8-6) to clinch the doubles points.
The victory on court one was huge because ORU was down a break on court three and battled back for the victory.
Taking the early lead, Lamar then turned to the bottom half of its lineup and they wasted little time grabbing the early advantage. The Cardinals took the first set on five of the six singles courts and it was freshman
Stefano Chappuis who gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with his victory on court six. Chappuis posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over ORU's Ryan Holloway, effectively knocking the wind out of Golden Eagles.
While Lamar still had to pick up two more matches to record the overall team victory they didn't have to wait long as
Joan Crespo and Omori-Cowie followed suit with wins on courts 5 and 4, respectively. The other matches were halted with Lamar clinched the deciding point.
The Cardinals will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to take on the University of Arkansas. The match against the Razorbacks is set for a 3 p.m. start.
