Cardinals Grab Road Split Against Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas – Runs were at a premium in a Tuesday doubleheader for Lamar University softball as they split two games on the road Texas Southern. Ten stranded baserunners haunted the Cardinals in a 4-3 walk-off defeat in Game 1, but they were able to rebound and grab a 2-1 win in Game 2.

Eight different Cardinals picked up hits in Game 1 with Rose Gonzales and Mikaila Kenney getting their first hits of the season while pinch-hitting. Brooke Davis hit a two-RBI double in the second while Trinity Brandon had an RBI groundout in the fifth. On the mound, Madison Guidry got the start allowing no runs on just one hit with two walks and two strikeouts. Sabrina Jolin came in and pitched 3.2 innings of relief but was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and a walk. Emma Wardlaw finished the game and secured a strikeout before allowing a walk-off single.

Veronica Harrison led the Cardinals with two hits in Game 2 while Shenita Tucker and Raigan Brannon each recorded singles as well. Kalie Amos also picked up her first hit of the season. Karyana Mitchell got the start on the mound and picked up her first win of the year after 5.1 innings of work allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Makayla Valle finished the game by picking up the save with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief allowing no hits and two walks.

Game 1: Texas Southern 4, LU 3

LU got on the board first in the second inning after three straight hits to start the frame including a two-RBI double by Davis. Texas Southern would respond in the third, however, by loading the bases, but Jolin was able to get out of the jam with two groundouts. The Cardinals would then add to their lead with an RBI groundout from Brandon in the fifth but would leave two runners stranded for the second straight inning.

The bats finally came alive for the home team in the sixth as an RBI single closed the gap. Two singles and a walk would load the bases with no one out in the seventh before a sac fly and a walk-off two-run RBI single clinched the game for Texas Southern.

Game 2: LU 2, Texas Southern 1

The Cardinals didn't let the sting of their previous defeat keep them down for long as they took the lead two batters into Game 2 as Harrison brought home Tucker on an RBI single in the top of the first. Texas Southern was able to get two runners on in the bottom of the second, but Mitchell forced a strikeout to get out of the jam.

Mitchell would do work as a pinch runner as well as she was able to steal home on a passed ball in the top of the fourth to extend the lead. LU looked to threaten to score again with the bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the fifth but were unable to plate any runs. An RBI double by the Tigers in the bottom of the sixth would be the end of Mitchell's evening, but Valle picked up the final five outs for the Cardinals to secure the road victory.

LU heads back to McNeese for the Cowgirl Classic II with a Friday doubleheader against Niagara and North Dakota with games at 1 and 3:30 p.m. They then turnaround for their home opener on Sunday as they face off against Niagara in another doubleheader with games at 1 and 3 p.m.
