Texas Tech Snaps Cardinals Win Streak

LUBBOCK, Texas – Lamar University's five game win streak, and four-game road win streak, came to a halt Saturday afternoon at Texas Tech. The Red Raiders defeated LU, 101-57, at the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock.

The Cardinals, who had been on the road for the entire month of December, shot 33 percent (23-of-70) from the field, including six three-pointers, but Big Red didn't have an answer for a Tech squad that was 36-of-65 (.554) from the field, including 13 makes from long range. The Red Raiders also took advantage of their opportunities at the stripe converting 16-of-18 (.833), while LU was only allowed nine attempts.

The Cardinals were led offensively by 11 points from junior Alexis Marmolejos while senior Ja'Sean Jackson added 10.

Both teams started quickly with Lamar converting three of its first six and Texas Tech 5-of-8. With the score tied at 7, the Red Raiders managed to build a bit of a cushion with a 13-0 run over a 3:30 stretch before Adam Hamilton halted the run with a mid-range jumper, but Tech pushed that run to 19-3.

Unfortunately for the Red and White, Texas Tech continued its strong shooting through the remainder of the half shooting nearly 50 percent in the opening 20 minutes (16-of-33/.485). The Red Raiders also took advantage of their opportunities from the free throw line connecting on 11-of-12 (.917).

Lamar struggled down the stretch of the opening half shooting just 10-of-34 (.294) from the field with two triples.

Tech also gained an advantage on the glass, 24-17, in the game's opening half.

Unfortunately, it was more of the same from Texas Tech to start the second. The hometown team hit 6 of its first 7 attempts to build a 64-31 lead heading into the first media timeout of the second half. Lamar was unable to match the Red Raiders start hitting just 2 of their first 8. Texas Tech managed to push its lead to 39 points knocking the wind out of Lamar's attack down the stretch.

The Cardinals will now take nine days off before returning to the court. Lamar's next contest will be Monday, Dec. 30, against Texas A&M-San Antonio. The game will wrap-up non-conference play for the Cardinals as well as kick off a five-game homestand. The game against the A&M-San Antonio will tip off at 6 p.m. from the Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at the Montagne Center.
