Lamar's Valiant Second Half Not Enough Against Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - Lamar's rough first half against fourth-ranked Texas was too much to overcome as the Longhorns handed LU a 95-58 defeat in Austin Wednesday. The Cardinals did put up a strong second half effort with 44 points.

Akasha Davis (14 points) and Sabria Dean (13 points) combined for 27 points to lead the Cardinals. R'Mani Taylor came off the bench to tally eight points while Justice Ross added seven. Big Red finished shooting 52.5 percent from the field and 68.2 percent from the free throw line.

The Cardinals started the game with a 4-2 lead following baskets by Davis and Dean only to watch the Longhorns go on a 49-10 run for the remainder of the half. Big Red was held to five field goals through the game's first 20 minutes as it couldn't solve the pressure applied by the Longhorns.

Once the second half began, the Cardinals responded with their best quarter by outscoring the Longhorns 25-24. Dean provided nine points while R'Mani Taylor and Justice Ross each had six in a quarter where the Cardinals converted 10-of-15 (66.7%) from the field. The reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year in Davis returned to form in the fourth quarter with eight points by hitting all three of her shots.

The Cardinals will look to bounce back in nine days as they will hit the road to meet up with SMU. The game will tip off at 4:30 p.m at the Moody Coliseum.
