LU Hosting UIW in Southland Conference Finale

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University soccer team will battle UIW at the LU Soccer Complex Friday for a chance to punch its ticket into the Southland Conference tournament. Big Red will also honor nine seniors for their careers in the Cardinal Red and White. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

LU's (5-7-5, 3-3-3 SLC) 2-0 setback to Northwestern State last Friday means that it is currently tied with Houston Christian (5-8-5, 3-3-3 SLC) for eighth in the conference standings with 12 points. While Big Red takes on UIW, the Huskies are scheduled to meet with Texas A&M-Commerce simultaneously. UT Rio Grande Valley is one point ahead of LU and will battle with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Cardinals can get as high as the sixth seed with a win and a UTRGV draw/loss.
 
All-Time vs. UIW
LU is undefeated in 11 meetings with UIW at 7-0-4. Big Red swept two meetings with UIW last season by a combined total of 3-0. In the last meeting, Isela Ramirez scored the winning goal in the ninth minute in Beaumont. The other match was a 2-0 shutout victory that featured the first career goal scored by Payton Joost in the 29th minute.

About UIW
UIW (8-7-2, 5-4 SLC) blanked Commerce 3-0 with goals from Peri Olmo, Sierra Wanamaker, and Meredith Caviglia. Wannamaker leads UIW with five goals, tied for ninth in the conference while Sinead Duffy is tied for sixth with four assists. Erica Defferding, who posted four saves in goal in the win over the Lions, is tied for third with 77 saves and second in saves percentage (.837).

Senior Day
The Cardinals will be recognizing nine seniors prior to the game for their time contributing to the soccer program. The nine being honored are Rafiatu Alhassan, Caragan Childs, Alana Clark, Trinity Clark, Taylor Conway, Marina Poljak, Payton Joost, Isela Ramirez, and Kaya Williams.

Should LU punch its ticket into the postseason, the Cardinals will look to defend their title starting Tuesday, Nov. 5th. The matchups will be determined after Friday's results.
