NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Lamar University soccer team could not find the back of the net as they were shut out by Northwestern State 2-0. The loss drops LU (5-7-5, 3-3-3 SLC) to eighth place in the conference tournament picture with one game remaining.
The Cardinals finished with an 18-7 shots advantage over NSU with both teams putting up five on goal.
Cena Carlson led the Cardinals with five shots, including two on goal, while
Rafiatu Alhassan (four) and
Taylor Conway (three) combined for seven shots.
Taylor Howard recorded three saves in goal.
LU outshot the Demons in the first half 6-5 and that was evident early on as Big Red put up four of the match's first five shots. Midway through the half, the Demons would enter LU territory and it was in the 30th minute that a shot from NSU's Madison Murphy barely crossed the goal line for a 1-0 lead. LU had two attempts to enter the locker room tied but were denied both times.
Four minutes into the second half, NSU doubled its lead with a goal from Taylor Spitzer. LU's defense held the Demons to one shot for the rest of the half while it fired 12 shots. Yet, it was great goalkeeping by NSU's Libe Banuelos, who finished with five saves, that kept Big Red off the scoreboard.
Big Red will play its last regular season game Friday, Nov. 1st, against UIW at the LU Soccer Complex. It will also mark senior day, as the Cardinals will honor nine seniors for their careers at LU.
