Lamar and Houston Christian Unable to Break Tie

HOUSTON, Texas - The Lamar University soccer team entered Friday's match against Houston Christian with a three-point lead for the eighth and final seed in the Southland Conference tournament picture. Ninety scoreless minutes later, the Cardinals (4-6-5, 2-2-3 SLC) maintained that three-point lead as they played the Huskies (3-8-5, 1-3-3 SLC) to a draw.

LU finished the match outshooting the Huskies 10-6, which included a 4-2 shots on goal advantage. Taylor Conway was the only Cardinal to post two shots while eight other Cardinals had one shot each. In goal, Taylor Howard recorded a pair of saves to earn her second shutout of the season.

The combatants combined for nine shots in the first half with each having two of goal. LU had its chances for the first goal in the 24th and 37th minutes respectively while allowing five shots to the Huskies. With under a minute to go in the half, a shot from HCU was on point to the top left of the goal, but Howard deflected the ball at the last moment to send both teams into the break scoreless.

Early in the second half, both teams had open goals, but couldn't take advantage. The Huskies' only shot of the half was blocked by Annika Kassenbrock in the 55th minute while LU was unable to capitalize on its chance six minutes later. The Cardinals outshot HCU 6-1 in the half, which included a couple of free kick chances that went over the net while the final opportunity to score occurred in the 71st minute.

Big Red now heads north to Commerce for their next matchup with Texas A&M-Commerce Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
