WACO, Texas – Lamar University has faced the toughest two matches to start the season in the Southland Conference – if not the country – opening the year Friday with a match at No. 3 Texas, followed by a match Saturday at No. 25 Baylor. The Bears were too strong for Big Red Saturday posting a 7-0 victory at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Facility.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals (0-2), Saturday's match followed a similar script to Friday. The home team picked up wins on courts 2 and 3 to take the doubles point. It was a tough way to start the day as the Cardinals' duo of
Max Amling and
Leon Nickel had a 4-3 lead on court one before the match was halted.
The Bears never let up as the teams made the transition to singles. Baylor turned to the top of their singles' lineup to close out the match. Baylor picked up wins from courts 2, 3 and 1 to secure the overall victory.
Baylor would close out the day with wins on the final three courts to secure the shutout.
The Cardinals will now have six days to prepare for their next match. The contest against UT Rio Grande Valley is set for a 10 a.m. start Friday, Jan. 19
