Cardinals Eyeing Colonel’s Charge in Thibodaux

BEAUMONT, Texas - Starting off 3-0 in the Southland Conference, Lamar University women's basketball team are one of two undefeated teams remaining in the conference. But they will be putting their four-game winning streak on the line this Saturday as they will travel to Thibodaux to meet with the Nicholls Colonels.

Akasha Davis became the second Cardinal this season to achieve 1,000 points in her career. Against McNeese, she tallied 20 points and secured 14 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the year. Throughout her three-year career, Davis has averaged 13.7 points per game in 72 games played.

LAST TIME WE STARTED 3-0 IN THE SOUTHLAND WAS WHEN?
The Cardinals are 3-0 to start conference play. The last time LU was 3-0 to open conference was back in the 2018-19 season. That year, they went 24-7 overall and 17-1 in the conference to finish first in the regular season. 

THREE BUZZER-BEATERS
In each of the first three quarters, the Cardinals recorded a buzzer-beater. Jacei Denley made one to end the first, Sabria Dean made one to end the second, and Akasha Davis made one to end the third. 

HISTORY VS THE COLONELS
The Cardinals split their two meetings with Nicholls last season to put their overall record at 27-19 overall. In their last meeting, the Cardinals won 70-57 as they were led by 21 points from Davis and 18 from Dean. Prior to the win, the Cardinals had lost three of four to the Colonels. 

MEET THE COLONELS
Under new head coach Jason Payne, the Colonels started the season 5-3 including a stunning road win over Tulane. But theu have since lost four of their last five games to be at 7-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference. In spite of this, they average 62.9 ppg as a team.  

LEXI ALEXANDER THE GREAT
Over the last six games, Lexi Alexander has tallied 109 points (18.1 ppg) for Nicholls including a 22-point outing against Houston Christian. She is sixth in the conference in scoring with 14.0 ppg. Last season, she scored 23 points in an overtime win against Lamar. She averaged 17.5 ppg against the Cardinals in the two meetings. 

UP NEXT FOR LU
The Cardinals return to Neches Arena for a home meeting on Thursday with Texas A&M-Commerce. The tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
