Cards Repeat Three-Goal Half in Second Straight 3-0 Victory

BEAUMONT, Texas - Fired up and motivated to create a winning streak, Lamar University's soccer team applied pressure offensively and defensively to the Southern Jaguars in a Thursday night meeting. All it took was three first half goals to give LU their second straight 3-0 victory.

This match almost played out like the second half of last Sunday's contest against Tarleton. 10 minutes into the first half, Cariel Ellis received a pass from Maddie Janolo and put one past SU's goalkeeper Sydney Bellamy's right side for an early 1-0 lead. At the 15-minute mark, Caragan Childs delivered a through ball towards Isela Ramirez, who ran towards the keeper and with her right foot netted the second goal.

Then, four minutes later, Hollie Massey took a shot, which was saved by the keeper only for Ellis to get the rebound and feed her the ball to which Massey struck one in for her second goal of the season. Those three goals were just part of a 20-shot first half.

LU finished the night putting up 36 shots total, including 15 on goal. Bellamy was able to record 12 saves to prevent more damage from LU, Big Red's defense would hold the Jaguars to two shots in which goalkeepers Nicole Panis and Maddie Rich each recorded a save.

"Overall, we are really happy to get a win and the shutout," remarked head coach Nathan Kogut. "It was a good team performance and we saw a lot of people play quality minutes. It was nice to see so many chances created and their keeper did a great job to keep us off the scoresheet even more, but we do wish we put some more away. We played a lot of kids and showed a lot of what we've focused on in training and what we can continue to improve on."

The Cardinals hit the road for a Sunday showdown against the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana in Lafayette. The kickoff is slated to start at 5 p.m.
