BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University returns to the friendly confines of Provost Umphrey Stadium Saturday to take on Lincoln (Calif.) University. A matchup that will be a historical marker in the record books when the two teams step on the field as it will be the first meeting between the two on the gridiron.
Both teams head into the week four matchup looking to flip the script to the 2023 campaign. The Oaklanders – in their third year of existence – got their year off to a start a week earlier than Lamar but they are 0-4 on the season. Big Red is 0-3 after facing three very tough opponents, including two on the road, one top-10 squad and one NCAA FBS opponent.
While the Oaklanders may not bring the preseason hype into Provost Umphrey Stadium that a nationally ranked squad did in week one, they have a roster littered with Division I FBS transfers many of whom played at Power 5 schools before transferring to Lincoln. If you just look at results alone, the Oaklanders have been in every football game they've played, including their last contest at Cal Poly where the Mustangs were forced to rally from a 20-7 deficit in the second half for the win to defeat Lincoln. Saturday's game will mark the second-straight game against a Division I opponent for the Oaklanders and one of seven on the season.
For the Red and White, LU has shown improvement every week, but Big Red is still looking for that complete game on both sides of the ball. Last week, the Cardinals put together two scoring drives at South Dakota to take an early 6-0 lead and held the Coyotes off the board until just before end of the first half. Unfortunately, the Cardinals struggled in the final 30 minutes and USD never looked back.
Saturday's kick off is set to kick off at 6 p.m. from Provost Umphrey Stadium. The game will broadcast live on Newstalk 560 and streamed live on ESPN+.
