LU Set To Open Conference Play in Cardinal Battle

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas - After ending the non-conference portion of their schedule with a win over a ranked opponent to run their winning streak to four games, the Lamar University's women's soccer team begins the 2023 Southland Conference schedule with a road match up with the Cardinals of Incarnate Word. Kickoff is set for 1 pm on Sunday in San Antonio.

Do You Believe in Upsets? YES!!!
On Thursday night, LU shocked the #17 ranked Xavier Musketeers 1-0 at the LU Soccer Complex to improve their record to 5-2-1. The win marked the first time in program history that LU defeated a nationally ranked team at home. The last time any LU team upset a nationally ranked team was back in 2018 when the LU football team knocked off Sam Houston State. Cariel Ellis scored the game-winning goal.

How Do You Say Climbing Up in Dutch?
Over the last four games, scoring goals on Nicole Panis has been difficult as LU as she had collected four straight shutouts. The all-time shutouts leader at LU now has 25 to her name. In addition, she recorded 13 saves against Xavier, which was the second highest single game mark behind the 16 she made at Arkansas. Already with 302 career saves, this puts her 11 saves shy of Lauren Lovejoy for third all-time in program history. The all-time record is 328 held by Bailey Fontenot.

History vs. UIW
LU is undefeated against UIW in nine meetings with five wins and four draws. Ironically, after starting their history with four straight draws, LU won the last five meetings including last season's 2-0 win as Arely Alaniz scored a goal while Cariel Ellis recorded an assist.

Meet the UIW Cardinals
UIW started the season with three shutout wins and a draw but have since lost their last two matches. UIW has scored 11 goals, led by Addison Rodriguez and Sierra Wannamaker with two goals. Meredith Caviglia has recorded a goal and a team-high two assists. In goal, Makenzie Hall won all three UIW matches without conceding a goal. The last three matches have seen Erica Defferding in goal, allowing the only two goals UIW has given up.

Next Up For LU
LU's home conference opener will be Sunday 9/24 against Houston Christian with a 1:00 p.m kickoff.
