Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Coppin State jumped out to an early first-set lead and never trailed, until early in the third, before defeating Lamar University, 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-16), in the second round of the UNLV Classic. The loss drops Lamar to 0-10 on the season.
The Cardinals were unable to produce the same consistency on offense that they saw yesterday against Portland. Big Red finished the day with 30 kills on 100 swings but struggled with 19 attack errors. LU finished day with .110 attack percentage. The Cardinals also managed just two blocks (combined with three block errors) and just two service aces.
Freshman
Lyric Jordan recorded a team-high 14 kills on 32 swings to end the day with a .281 attack percentage.
The Eagles (9-2) managed to prevent Lamar from going on any sustained runs with their attacking at the net. Led by TaKenya Stafford's 12 kills, Coppin posted a 44-8-95 (.379) effort to go along with seven blocks and eight service aces.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday to close out the tournament against host UNLV. The match against the Rebels is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. from the Cox Pavilion.
