Cardinal Soccer Kicks Off 23-24 Athletic Season

BEAUMONT, Texas - The 2023-24 Lamar University athletic season kicked off Sunday night as the soccer team opened their season with an exhibition contest against LSU-Eunice at the LU Soccer Complex. The Cardinals would put up six goals on just 24 shots for a 6-0 victory while holding the Bengals to three shots all game long. 

The exhibition comprised of three 30-minute halves and the Cardinals would not disappoint the fans in attendance for the contest. LU's six goals came from Rafiatu Alhassan, Riley Wilson, Isela Ramirez, Laura Linares, Maddie Janolo, and Kamryn Harvey. Eva Karen had three assists while Hollie Massey had two. Linares, Addie Russu, and Annika Kassenbrock also tallied an assist in the match. 

The first half would see LU compile seven shots with one goal coming from Alhassan at the 14:57 mark in the half on an assist by Karen. Nicole Panis would record one save in the half as LU's defense held the Bengals to one shot. 

In the second 30-minute half, Wilson (8:42) and Ramirez (9:58) tallied two goals in a span of 76 seconds both on assists by Karen while Addie Russu also contributed to Ramirez's goal. Then, Kassenbrock found Linares (10:02) to stretch LU's lead to 4-0. Maddie Rich would make a save in her first appearance. 

The final 30 minutes would include two goals from Janolo (11:50) and Harvey (20:11). Massey would assist on both goals while Linares also assisted on the Harvey goal for the 6-0 final. 

Next week, the Cardinals will have their annual Red-White scrimmage at 7:00 p.m., at the LU Soccer Complex.
