BEAUMONT, Texas - Looking to bounce back after a tough season opening loss, Lamar University's soccer teams makes their way to Huntsville for a Thursday night contest against former Southland Conference foe Sam Houston. The game will kick off a 7:00 p.m, and air on ESPN+.

While the shorthanded Cardinals outshot Abilene Christian 11-7 in their opening game, they were unable to get one past ACU's keeper as the Cardinals fell 1-0 at home. Arely Alaniz led LU with three shots while both Kamryn Harvey and Kolbi Coleman recorded two shots each. Nicole Panis managed three saves in net.


On the Plus Side
It's been four seasons since LU started a year 0-1. In 2019, the Cardinals lost their opening game to Oklahoma State 3-0. But that season saw LU finish 16-7 overall and win the regular season Southland Conference title at 10-1. As an added bonus, the Cardinals would go on to win the conference title.


History vs. Sam Houston
While LU is 7-10-1 all-time against the Bearkats, the Cardinals won their last two meetings in 2021 by scores of 2-1. Eva Karen and Isela Ramirez both tallied goals while Kaisa Juvonen earned an assist in the first game (10/3/21). Ramirez would also pick up an assist in the second game (10/15/21).


Meet the Bearkats
SHSU is currently 1-1 after opening the season with a 4-2 win over Prairie View A&M before falling 3-1 to Louisiana-Monroe. Kennedy Baquero had a two-goal game in the win over PVAMU, which currently leads the Bearkats. Savannah Hall has 12 saves through two games (.706 SV%) and a goals against average of 2.50.

 
Next Up For LU
The Cardinals will continue their two-match road trip as they will head east to Louisiana to meet up with Grambling this Sunday at 5 p.m.
