BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University's soccer team hosted their annual Red-White scrimmage on Sunday night just five days prior to their opening kickoff game of the season. In front of their home fans, LU White held on to a 2-1 victory over the LU Red.
In three 25-minute halves, LU White finished the night with 20 shots and half of them on target. Rafiatu Alhassan would score both goals in the first session with both assists coming from Hollie Massey. Maddie Rich would make four saves in goal.Â
On the LU Red side, Addison Russu netted a goal in the third half with under 11 minutes to go to cut the lead to one. Nicole Panis finished the night making eight saves and kept the red team alive. But a last chance opportunity to tie the game didn't connect and LU White was deemed the winners.
"I am pleased with the growth of this team throughout preseason," said head coach Nathan Kogut. It was nice to have a chance to finish off our first two weeks with a competitive match within the group. We had a lot of standout performances this preseason and it's great to see the way our newcomers have meshed with the returners. I'm excited to get the real games started and see what our girls can do with a very challenging first month of games."
With preseason done, the Cardinals will rejoin forces to get set for their opening game this Friday night at 7 p.m., against Abilene Christian. The game will be at the LU Soccer Complex.Â
