BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University football hosted a closed scrimmage Saturday at Provost Umphrey Stadium. The scrimmage, which was approximately 120 plays in total, saw the Cardinals' defense get out to a strong start, with the offense finding its rhythm later in the day.
The defense forced three-and-outs in three of the first four series and held the offense off the scoreboard until seventh drive of the morning. The Cardinals racked up six tackles for losses, two sacks, a fumble recovery, pass breakup and several hurries.
Despite the slow start, once the offense got on the board they scored on consecutive drives (touchdown and field goal) and both drives consisted big plays. The first an 85-yard completion from
Robert Coleman to Nederland native
Kyndon Fuselier followed by a 36-yard completion from
Mike Chandler to
Izaha Jones. The completion to Jones was later followed by a 34-yard run from R.J. Carver (one of two 30-yard plus runs from the sophomore) which set up Big Red's second score of the game.
By the end of the scrimmage, the offense put seven touchdowns (four passing and three rushing) on the scoreboard with a couple of those coming on series starting on the defense's 20-yard line.
The Cardinal signal callers finished the day 14-of-28 for 271 yards and four touchdowns, with no interceptions. Transfer
Robert Coleman completed 5-of-10 passes for 145 yards and two scores (85 yards and 30 yards to
Andre Dennis),
Mike Chandler was 4-of-9 for 79 yards and a score (25 yards to Fuselier) and
Jakolby Longino completed 5-of-9 for 47 yards and a score (eight-yard pass to Fuselier).
Fuselier hauled in three passes for 118 yards and he made the most of his catches ending the day with three touchdowns.
The Cardinals carried the ball 45 times for 214 yards (4.8 ypc) with three touchdowns but did fumble the ball away once. Carver had eight carries for 76 yards (9.5 ypc) including runs of 34 and 33 yards. Freshman Rashaad Moore led the Cardinals with 12 rushes with for 46 yards and two scores (four and five yards). LU's other rushing touchdown came from Chandler (five yards).
Junior Samuel Scaife led the defense with four tackles including one for a loss.
Jayden Madkins and
Foday Jalloh each added three stops on the day.
