THIBODAUX, La. - Lamar University's softball team had to wait five hours to get their series finale against Nicholls due to inclement weather. But once the weather cleared, the Cardinals would be unable to get on the scoreboard as they fell 1-0 to the Colonels.
LU was held to just four hits all game long. Estella Garza would pick up half of those hits while Sam Bean and Aleka Xayaseng picked up the other two. Aaliyah Ruiz got the start and took the loss allowing one run on four hits while striking out four batters. Fadwa Ben Karim pitched two scoreless innings of relief striking out two batters while conceding one hit.
The Cards' first inning rally was killed off by a double play ball. Two innings later, Garza and Bean would single placing a runner in scoring position. But Bean was forced out at second off the bat of Xayaseng and Garza was stranded at third following a pop-up to second.
With one out in the fourth inning, Nicholls put two runners in scoring position before Melise Gossen drove in the lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly. Over the final three innings, Nicholls starter Audrey McNeil would hold Big Red to one hit as she faced the minimum nine hitters to end the contest.
The Cardinals will continue their road trip next week when they will travel to Corpus Christi to meet the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Friday will have a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
