CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - After splitting their doubleheader yesterday with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Lamar University's softball team sought out a chance to claim the series against the Islanders. But the bats were unable to keep up with the fifth and sixth inning outbursts of TAMCC, who handed LU a 5-1 defeat.
Aaliyah Ruiz started the game and pitched three scoreless inning allowing four hits while striking out one batter.
Cameron Niedenthal, who homered in the only Cardinal run, would take the loss in two-thirds of an inning allowing the first two of five runs by the Islanders.
Estela Garza recorded the other two of LU's three hits.
After retiring the first two hitters she faced in the game, Ruiz ran into a problem as the Islanders loaded the bases with three straight singles. However, she struck out Kimane Rogron to end the threat. The Cardinals were retired in order for the first three innings until the fourth when Garza broke through in the hit column. LU then had two runners on, but were unable to drive them in.
The next two Islander innings would produce five runs to break the game wide open. Niedenthal homered to lead off the seventh inning to break the shutout. But the Islanders sealed the series with the last three outs.
