Cardinals Drop Marathon Game to Nicholls

BEAUMONT, Texas – In a game that saw 10 combined runs scored in the first two innings, only to have one run scored in the final 12 innings as Nicholls outlasted Lamar University, 9-8, in 19 innings Friday evening at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
 
The game saw both teams combine to use 14 different pitchers.
 
Jacob Ellis got the start for Big Red and went 4.0 innings but struggled allowing five runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore Jackson Cleveland came on in the ninth inning and pitched 7.0 strong innings holding Nicholls scoreless during that stretch giving up just three hits with seven strikeouts. The Cardinals' staff combined to strikeout 17 batters.
 
Tyler Theriot got the start for Nicholls and went 4.0 innings allowing six runs – five earned – on six hits. He was one of seven Colonels to pitch on the night. Nico Saltaformaggio came on in the eighth inning for the Nicholls and pitched 7.1 scoreless innings not allowing a hit but did walk three batters.
 
The Colonels collected 19 hits on the day, while Big Red did its damage on 11 hits. Eight different Cardinals recorded a hit Friday led by multi-hit efforts from Ben MacNaughton (2-for-9, 2 runs), Kanin Dodge (2-for-7, RBI) and Ethan Ruiz (2-for-9, 2 RBIs).
 
The Cardinals built a 6-4 lead on five hits after the first two innings but Nicholls managed to tie things up with a run in the fourth, two in the sixth (which was followed by a two-run spot from LU in the bottom half of the inning) and one in the seventh. The seventh-inning run would be the final run until Nicholls' game winner in the 19th.
 
The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they look to even up the series against the Colonels. Game two is slated for a 2 p.m. start from Vincent-Beck Stadium.
