HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Lamar University's softball team took a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning against Sam Houston on Wednesday night. But the Bearkats would answer back with three runs in the fourth and hold on for a 3-1 victory.
Felixia Hinojosa led the Cardinals with two hits on the day. Sam Bean, Aleka Xayaseng, Kalyn Xayaseng, and Cameron Niedenthal would also collect a hit for LU. Hayley Freudenberg drove in the lone RBI for the Cardinals. Despite taking the loss, Niedenthal started the game and pitched six innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out seven batters.
It took three batters into the game for the Cardinals to get on the board first. Following singles by Bean and Aleka Xayaseng, who each later advanced on a passed ball, Freudenberg drove in Bean on a sacrifice fly to give LU a 1-0 lead. The third and fourth innings would give LU more scoring chances only to leave runners on base.
While Niedenthal held SHSU scoreless for three innings, the Bearkats finally broke through and scored three runs in the fourth. After being retired in order in the fifth and sixth innings, the Cardinals would send up the tying run in the seventh inning before the rally attempt ended with a fly out to right.
The Cardinals get set for conference play as they will take on Northwestern State beginning this Friday in Natchitoches. The doubleheader will start at 4:00 p.m.
