BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, but Pennsylvania scored one in their half of the 10
th and that was the difference as the Quakers held on a 7-6 decision.
The Cardinals scored their six runs on 10 hits with two errors, while Penn plated seven runs on 10 hits with two errors.
Junior
Jacob Ellis got the start and went 3.1 innings allowing three runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. He was lifted in the fourth inning for
Foster Kreuzer.
Patrick Hail came on in the seventh inning and pitching three perfect innings before
Jackson Cleveland pitched the 10
th.
The Quakers started Cole Zaffiro who when 4.1 allowing five runs on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. He gave way to David Shoemaker in the fifth inning. Shoemaker didn't allow a run but surrendered three hits with two walks. Penn's Eli Trop blew the save giving up a run in the ninth but was credited with the win after Penn scored one in the 10
th. Edward Sarti picked up the save after a scoreless 10
th.
Four different Cardinals recorded multi-hit games led by
Ben MacNaughton's 2-for-5 performance with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Kevin Bermudez was 2-for-4 with a walk, RBI and a run scored.
The Cardinals took the first lead of the game with two runs in their half of the first inning, but Penn answered back with six consecutive runs to take a 6-2 lead. After Penn scored three in their half of the fifth, the Cardinals battled back with a thee in the bottom half of the fifth.
LU had runners at second and third with just one out and MacNaughton at the plate. MacNaughton singled to right and made his way to second after the right fielder struggled to get the ball. Both
Cameron Yadon and
Ethan Ruiz scored on the play.
The score remained 6-5 until the bottom of the ninth, when Ruiz led off the inning by getting hit. The Cardinals had two on with two out when
Josh Blankenship came up and singled to right driving in
Peyton Sanderson to tie the game at six.
Unfortunately, the Quakers answered with a run in their half of the 10
th and that would be the difference in the game as LU couldn't respond in the bottom half of the inning.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday to close out the series against Penn. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. from Vincent-Beck Stadium.
