BEAUMONT, Texas - The last two tournaments for Lamar University's men's golf team, which took place out of state, did not lead to the results they wanted. Hoping to change their fortune, the Cardinals will look to get themselves back in the right direction as they will be returning to the familiar Texas grounds to the University of Houston's All-American Intercollegiate.
LU's last tournament at the Seminole Classic in Tallahassee did have a stoppage of play due to darkness by way of early weather issues. But when the tournament ended after three rounds, the Cardinals would place in the top 10 with a three-day total of 910Â strokes (308-297-305).
Hugo Hellman started his tournament with an even-par 72, but would finish tied for 22nd with 225 strokes (72-76-77).
Carl Hardin ended up tied for 40th recording 229 strokes (75-76-78) while
Pedro Marin took a tie for 46th with 230 strokes (78-75-77).
Guillermo Estivill had the lowest round of any Cardinal with 70 strokes in the second. But the scores 82 and 84 in the other rounds meant that he tied for 70th with 236. Despite having the lowest third round total of 73,
Jacob Lindh's final total was 238 strokes (83-82-73) that got him a tie for 74th.
The Cardinals return to the site of the All-American Intercollegiate where last year, they finished tied for 8th place with 599 strokes (309-290), despite the third round being canceled due to inclement weather. Marin was a top 15 finisher tying for 14th with 146 strokes (76-70) while Estivill (T23rd; 75-73=148), and Hardin (T49; 79-73=152) cracked the top 50. Hellman (80-74=154) and Lindh (82-79=161) each finished tied for 56th and tied for 88th respectively.
LU will be one of 21 teams in the competition, which will feature six schools ranked in the top 50, including #46 Houston, #14 Tennessee, #17 Kansas State, #29 Mississippi, #36 Louisville, and #47 LSU. Also competing will be Abilene Christian, Arkansas State, Charleston Southern, Georgia State, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Rice, Sam Houston, Southern Miss, Texas State, ULM, UT Rio Grande Valley, and UTSA.
This tournament will start Monday with 36 holes and will conclude with the final 18 on Tuesday. The tournament will take place at the Golf Club of Houston.
