Cardinals Drop Extra-Innings Thriller to St. Louis

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – After falling behind by four, Lamar University rallied to tie the game in the top of the eighth, but it was St. Louis that got the key hit in the 10th to record their second walk-off win in as many days. The loss drops LU to 13-6 (.684) on the season.

The Cardinals scored their five runs on 10 hits with an error but left 15 runners on base. St. Louis scored six runs on eight hits with an error, while stranding 10.

Seven different Cardinals recorded hits Saturday including multi-hit games from Ryan Snell (3-for-5) and Tanner Wilson (2-for-3, run). Luke Bumpus finished the day 0-for-4 at the plate but walked twice and drove in three runs. Kirkland Banks and Kevin Bermudez (1-for-5, double) drove in the other two runs.

Jeremy Rivera got the start Saturday for the Cardinals but struggled allowing five earned runs on two hits in 2.1 innings. Rivera also walked four Billikens. He was one of six Cardinals to pitch as senior Daniel Cole (0-1) took the loss after allowing a run on a hit in the 10th.

MacNaughton got the Cardinals out to a quick start in the top half of the first. MacNaughton led off the game with a triple to left, and he was able to come home off the bat of Luke Bumpus. The LU advantage was short lived as the Billikens answered for three runs in their half of the first. The Cardinals put themselves in a great position to answer back in the second loading the bases, but a double play ended the inning.

St. Louis' lead increased to four when they plated two more in third. The Cardinals answered back with a run in the top half of the fifth. Again, the Cardinals called on Bumpus' bat. After the Cardinals led off the inning getting their first two runners on MacNaughton sacrificed them over. Bumpus then drove Wilson in on a grounder to third.

The Cardinals got another run back in the seventh. After MacNaughton walked to lead off the inning, Bumpus and Kevin Bermudez managed to get him to third and he came around to score on a wild pitch.

After a shutdown bottom of the seventh, Lamar stayed on the attack in the eighth. LU loaded the bases for Ethan Ruiz who was able to reach on an error to score Kanin Dodge. Two batters later, Bumpus came through again with a fielder's choice to score Banks.

The Cardinals then handed the ball to Jackson Cleveland in the bottom of the inning. The sophomore pitcher came on and struck out the side in the home half. Big Red had two on with one out in the ninth and loaded the bases in the 10th but came away empty. That would prove costly as St. Louis loaded the bases with two outs in their half of the 10th. Tyler Fogarty then came up and recorded the game-winning hit with a single through the left side.

The Cardinals return to the diamond Sunday to close out the series against St. Louis. Game three is slated for a noon start from the USA Baseball Stadium Complex.
