HOUSTON, Texas – The Lamar University's women's tennis team put up a tough fight but dropped a 4-1 decision to UTSA Saturday morning at the Houston Country Club. The loss drops LU to 1-4 (.200) on the season.
"I know the score doesn't reflect how hard we played today, but I'm very proud of this team," said head coach
David Wong. "We agreed to stop the match when the deciding point was scored (ahead of time) but we were in some of the matches that were halted. We can take positives from this moving forward."
The Cardinals duo of
Ana Jolic and
Noelia Lorca were locked in a tight battle at No. 2 doubles in a match that went to a tiebreak. Unfortunately, the Roadrunners managed to take victories on courts 1 and 3 doubles to secure the point.
Despite having dropped the point, the two teams completed the match on court 2, but the 'Runners were able to hold on for a 7-6 (8-6) victory in the end.
As the two teams transitioned to singles, the Cardinals were able to tie the match on court No. 6 as UTSA was forced to default on the court 6 handing the victory officially over to freshman
Megan Do.
Junior
Elena Rubio had just won her second set to force a third at No. 5, and senior
Femke Tjon-A-Joe was down a set but tied 2-2 in a second set tiebreak when the match was called due to UTSA's straight-set victories on courts 2 – 4 singles. Despite the setbacks in those three matches, UTSA was pushed to tiebreakers at both Nos. 2 and 4 singles before recording the victory.
The Cardinals will now take a week to prepare for a trip to Nacogdoches, Texas to face Stephen F. Austin. The match against the Lumberjacks is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
