WBB Central: Houston Christian Pt. 2

BEAUMONT, Texas - Thursday night saw Lamar University's women's basketball team overcome an early 10-point hole to dispatch Houston Christian University 71-63 in the Montagne Center. Now, the Cardinals will face-off with the Huskies again as this time, they will travel to Houston on Saturday for the rematch at 2:00 p.m. 

SOUTHLAND STANDINGS UPDATE
While the Cardinals won their game against the Huskies last night, they still are currently fourth in the Southland Conference standings at 9-5 to go with their overall 15-10 record. But, they have a three game edge on UIW, HCU, Northwestern State, and McNeese, who are each tied for fifth at 6-8. LU is two games back Southeastern Louisiana (11-3) holds a one-game lead on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (10-4) and a one-and-a-half game lead on Texas A&M-Commerce (9-4), who have yet to make up a game against Nicholls. 


IF I HAD 32 PORTIAS, I'D RULE THE WORLD
Portia Adams produced a career-high 32 points against HCU in the 71-63 win. She converted 11-of-18 field goals and had 31 by the end of the third quarter. Her previous mark was 24 against Loyola (LA) in December of 2022.   
 

FREE WILLY? NO, FREE THROWS
The Cardinals are second in free throw percentage with 72.1%  only trailing HCU in the conference, who has 73.8% made free throws. Adams is first in the conference with 88.0% made despite hitting 44-of-50. Sabria Dean is third with 85.3% having converted 64-of-75 from the line.


HOUSTON BORN, TAYLOR MADE
Houston native R'Mani Taylor is set to return to her hometown this Saturday. She has scored double-figures in the last four games, including 15 points, a new season-high against Houston Christian. In the win on Thursday, Taylor made six field goals, which was also a new season high for her.


HISTORY AGAINST THE HUSKIES
The Cardinals are 18-3 all-time against the newly christened Houston Christian Huskies. The Cardinals have won 11 of the last 11 games against HCU. HCU's last victory was on Feb. 15, 2020 when they won 72-59.


KENNEDY, KENNEDY, KEN-NAH-DY
Kennedy Wilson led the Huskies with 22 points on 7-of-12 from the field against LU. This was a new career-high for her after she scored 20 at New Orleans last year.


MISS 1,000
In scoring 18 points against LU, N'Denasija Collins eclipsed the 1,000 career-point mark against becoming only the 12th HCU player in program history to reach the milestone.
