Cardinals Conclude Houston Invitational

HOUSTON, Texas - In their final day of the Houston Invitational, Lamar University's softball team had rematches against both Virginia and Nebraska from earlier. Although LU took both teams to seven innings, they fell twice to drop to 0-5 to start the season.

Game on would see LU battle with Virginia only to come up short 4-1. After four scoreless innings, the Cavaliers grabbed the early lead in the top of the fifth inning. But LU responded in the bottom half of the fifth as Sam Bean reached on a fielder's choice, went to second on a single, third on a walk, and scored on a groundout from Kaylee Ancelot to tie the game. But three runs on two UVA homers in the sixth inning gave the Cavaliers a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, LU brought up the tying run with one out after a couple of walks. However, an infield fly and strikeout ended the Cardinal rally.

Aleka Xayaseng recorded a team-high two hits while Bean, Kalyn Xayaseng, Nicolette Ramirez, and Felixia Hinojosa each recorded a hit. Karyana Mitchell pitched six innings giving up four runs on seven hits, but did strikeout six batters in the circle.

Game two would have LU pick up just one hit from Bean although LU had multiple chances to score. Aaliyah Ruiz would take the loss pitching 2.1 innings allowing five runs on eight hits. Fadwa Ben Karim made her Cardinal debut allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two batters.

The Cardinal will travel to Austin for a Wednesday showdown against the University of Texas. The first pitch will not begin until 6:00 p.m.
