Cardinals Begin 23-24 Campaign at Home

| By:

BEAUMONT, Texas - With their season set to get underway, Lamar University's women's basketball team tips-off at 6:00 p.m. at the newly christened Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at the Montagne Center this Wednesday night. Their first opponent of the year will be the Texas College Steers of the NAIA's Red River Conference.

Why Did You Have to Score a Century in an Exhibition?
The Cardinals hosted North American University in an exhibition game last Thursday night and put up 102 points while holding the Stallions to 37. Big Red had three players in double-figures with a familiar name in Akasha Davis leading with 19 points while Jacei Denley (15 points) and T'Aaliyah Miner (14 points) combined for 29 points.

The Season's Started and We Haven't Left Yet
This marks the first time since 2014-15 that LU is beginning their season at home in the Neches Arena. LU last played Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 14, 2013 losing 75-55 to the Ragin' Cajuns. Since then, the Cardinals are 1-7 in openers with the one win being against ULL (79-77 OT) in the 2018-19 season.

History vs. The Steers
The Cardinals are 1-0 all-time against the Steers. Their win came on Nov. 29, 2004 as LU won 72-24.

Meet the Steers
Based out of Tyler and a member of the NAIA's Red River Conference,  the Steers went 12-23 last season averaging 59.3 points per game while allowing opponents to average 60.2. Te'Aire Hambrick led all scorers on the team with 370 points (14.2 ppg) and also grabbed 138 rebounds while Aliyah Solis dished out 112 assists.

Up Next
LU will be on the road for a two-game stretch. First up will be a Friday night meeting in Arlington against the UT-Arlington Mavericks at 5:00 p.m.
