FARMVILLE, Va. – Lamar University knocked down 14 three-pointers and shot nearly 50 percent from three-point range Sunday afternoon to defeat Delaware State, 84-81, on the final day of the Longwood MTE at the Joan Perry Brock Center. The Cardinals ended the tournament with a 2-1 record and moves to 4-3 (.571) on the season.
Junior
Terry Anderson led the way for Lamar with a team-high 18 points. He was one of three Cardinals to finish in double figures for an offense that shot better 46 percent from the field (29-of-63), and an overwhelming 14-of-29 (.483) from three-point range.
It was the Cardinals' success at three-point line that turned out to be the difference in the game. Delaware Sate was 30-of-65 (.462) from the field with only six three-pointers. The Hornets took advantage of their opportunities at the free throw line converting 15-of-19 (.789) and outrebounded the Cardinals by five.
Neither team got into trouble with turnovers as Lamar had 13 and DSU 14, and even when a turnover was forced the defenses stepped up to prevent points off the miscues. The Cardinals scored 14 points off DSU's 14 mistakes, while the Hornets could manage just 11 points.

Adam Hamilton just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. DSU was led in scoring by 27 points from Martaz Robinson.
Anderson was the third different leading scorer for the Cardinals had in their three games at Longwood.
After trailing by three early, the Cardinals rattled off a 10-0 run capped by consecutive Pryor field goals to take a seven-point lead with less than nine remaining in the half. The lead was pushed to nine after DSU hit a free throw to stop the Lamar run but the Cardinals followed with an Anderson three-pointer at the other end of the floor.
After Lamar built its lead to 11 points, the Hornets made a run to get back within four, following a Robinson three-pointer with 4:34 remaining. Following the three-pointer the Cardinals called a timeout to stop the momentum and re-establish order. Big Red never allowed Delaware State to get any closer in the opening 20 minutes and took a six-point lead, 40-34, into the locker room.
Both teams shot the ball well in the first half. The Cardinals were 14-of-28 (.500) from the field, including a 6-of-12 (.500) effort on three-pointers. The Hornets were 12-of-29 (.414) from the field with three triples.
Early in the second half
Ja'Sean Jackson buried a three-pointer to give Lamar a nine-point advantage, but Delaware State began to chip away at the lead. The Hornets got the lead down to five at the free throw line before the Cardinals responded with a 9-2 run on a Pennebaker three-pointer and baskets from
Jakevion Buckley and Jackson.
The Hornets continued to chip away at the Cardinals' lead and managed to tie the game at 65 following a Deywik Taverez basket with less than nine to play. After the Cardinals regained a five-point lead, DSU followed by scoring the next five points to tie the game back up at 70. Both teams had an opportunity to break the tie in the final 40 seconds but the defenses stepped up on both ends to force overtime.
In the extra period, the Cardinals scored first and then turned a two-point advantage into a five-point lead following a Pennebaker three from the corner. It was the Cardinals' 14
th three-pointer of the game, and the final dagger as the Delaware State never recovered. The Cardinals never trailed in the overtime picking up their second win in three days at the Longwood MTE.
The Cardinals road trip continues Thursday when it travels to San Antonio, Texas to face UTSA for the second time this season. The game will tip off at 8 p.m. from the Convocation Center.
