Cards Hold Off Late Surging Demons for Ninth Straight Win

BEAUMONT, Texas -Lamar University extended their winning streak to nine games with a 1-0 shutout victory over the Northwestern State Demons. After withstanding a series of late game shots from the Demons, the win moves LU to 5-0 in Southland Conference play to go with their 10-2-1 record.

LU scored the game's only goal in the 30th minute.  came from Rafiatu Alhassan received a pass from Trinity Clark and managed to put a shot past the goalkeeper from the right of the top of the box. This marks the first goal of the season for the junior from Dunkwa, Ghana.  LU outshot the Demons 20-8 while Nicole Panis managed three saves for the match.

The first half played out like most halves for Big Red as the Cardinals held the Demons to just three shots defensively while firing 11 shots. Alhassan's goal in the 30th minute put LU up 1-0 going into the break. The second half continued the way the first half was as up to the 70th minute, the Cardinals held a 16-4 shot advantage.

But over the last 20 minutes, the Demons slowly started apply pressure on the Cardinals as they would have four great chances to score. Each time though, the ball went wide or over the top of the net. LU still managed to win the shot battle in the second half 8-5 en route to the win.

"This was a really difficult game for us and I'm proud of our team for battling through to get the win," said head coach Nathan Kogut. "We scored a great goal in the first half and probably should have had a couple more, especially with the wind. Northwestern State made it difficult for us in the second half when they had the wind, and we didn't do a good enough job breaking them down. We will focus on recovery and turn our attention to a big rivalry game on Sunday."

The Cardinals will travel across the border to take on their rival McNeese for a 1:00 pm kickoff this Sunday in Lake Charles, La.
