Corpus Christi, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team closed the fall season with a bang Sunday afternoon on the final day of competition at the Islander Open II tournament, hosted by rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Lamar won two flight titles Sunday with one coming in singles and one in doubles. This coming after Big Red opened the tournament with a 6-0 start Friday.
Freshman
Leon Nickel took part in both titles has he opened the day on the court with teammate
Brandon Do in doubles competition. The Cardinals' duo faced off against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Etienne Marty and Matthieu Coignet and recorded a victory in an emotionally draining, 7-6 (7-4) decision.
The day wasn't over for Nickel who returned to the court in singles to face Marty against, and once again it would be a long draining match that would go an extra frame before being decided. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Nickel was forced to rally in the second taking a 7-6 (7-4) decision to force a super tiebreak. In the extra frame Nickel jumped out in front and never relinquished the lead posting a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-5 victory.
With the fall season in the books, the Cardinals will have nearly 10 weeks to begin preparing for the start of the spring season. Big Red will return to the court Friday, Jan. 12
th when they travel to Austin to take on Texas.
