BEAUMONT, Texas - With a second straight Southland Conference regular season title and top seed in the upcoming conference tournament wrapped up, Lamar University's soccer team will have their final home regular season contest as they will be taking on Southeastern Louisiana. On what will be senior night for six members of the team, the Cardinals will kickoff with the Lions at 7:00 p.m.
Deja Vu All Over Again, But With a Few Differences
Last Friday night, the Cardinals traveled to Corpus Christi and defeated the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Much like last season, the Cardinals came away with a one goal win to clinch a share of the Southland Conference regular season title. Arely Alaniz, who scored the game-winner last season, assisted on the game-winning goal to Hollie Massey. With Texas A&M-Commerce tying to UIW, Big Red clinched the conference title outright.Â
A New Queen in Beaumont
With one save in the win against TAMU-CC, Nicole Panis broke the all-time school record for most saves with 329. This passes the all-time mark previously held by Bailey Fontenot (328). Panis already has the school records for wins (45), shutouts (30), and games started (67). She is also on pace to set the school record for career goals against average and save percentage.Â
More Records Fall
With the 1-0 win over TAMU-CC, the Cardinals have set a new single season mark with 11 clean sheets in one year. The previous mark was 10, which was achieved in 2017 and 2022. Panis also has set a new single season mark with 10.5 shutouts in a season. The record had been held by Lauren Lovejoy, who was in goal for all 10 shutouts in 2017.
Arely: The Last Line of Defense
Alaniz's assist on the game-winning goal and leading the program to an 11th shutout of the season would earn her the final SLC Defensive Player of the Week honors of the year. This is Alaniz's second career weekly honor.Â
Last Time Vs. SoutheasternÂ
The Cardinals blanked the Lions 1-0 in Hammond in their earlier meeting of the season. Isela Ramirez was the lone goal scorer as she netted the winner in the 51st minute. Panis recorded two saves in goal as the Cardinal defense held SLU to four shots.Â
Since You've Been Gone
Fresh off a 2-0 win over Nicholls, the Lions are locked in a tie for the fourth seed along side TAMU-CC. At 4-4-1 in the conference, their top two scorers of Mya Guillory and Hanna Moffatt each have four goals with the former having two assists to lead with 10 points. Hailie Yoder has three assists to lead the Lions while Olivia Griffin has a 1.18 GAA with 57 saves in all six SLU victories.Â
Next Up
As the regular season SLC champs again, the Cardinals will have the number one seed in the upcoming SLC tournament hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Their first match won't be until Friday, Nov. 3rd as they will take on the winner of the fourth seed and fifth seed.Â
