Cardinals Clinch Southland Conference Regular Season Title Outright

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas - Having clinched a share of the Southland Conference regular season title for the second straight season with a win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night, Lamar University's soccer team needed some help from other schools to clinch the outright program. With Sunday's result of Texas A&M-Commerce playing UIW to a 1-1 draw, LU has clinched their fourth regular season title in program history.

Entering this weekend, the Cardinals had a six-point lead over the Lions following a 2-2 draw. But with AMU-C playing two conference games while LU had just one, Big Red needed at least a win over the Islanders of AMU-CC while the Lions had to lose or tie with either Nicholls or UIW. AMU-C took care of business with Nicholls on Friday, but would end up tying UIW. This now means that LU (8-0-1, 25 points) has a five-point lead on the Lions (6-1-2, 20 points) with only one game to go.

This marks the fourth conference title for LU in program as they have previously won in 2017, 2019, and last season. As a result, the Cardinals will now be the number one seed in the upcoming conference tournament to be hosted in Corpus Christi. Big Red will have their first conference tournament match on Friday, Nov. 3rd where they will get the winner of the fourth and fifth seeds.

But before LU, who also has a 13-2-2 overall record can get set to defend their conference tournament title, they will have one more home match against Southeastern. There, they will honor six seniors for their careers in Cardinal Red and kickoff is scheduled to start at 7 pm.
