Big Red Captures Eleventh Straight Victory

BEAUMONT, Texas - In their second meeting with UIW on the season, Lamar University's soccer team posted another 1-0 shutout victory to make it 11 straight wins, which is one shy of the program mark held by the 2017 and 2019 teams. LU is 12-2-1 and with Texas A&M-Commerce losing tonight, are the only undefeated team left in conference at 7-0.

Big Red put up 20 shots with 15 on goal as Arely Alaniz (five) and Hollie Massey (four), who would each assist on the lone goal to Isela Ramirez, combined for nine shots. Rafiatu Alhassan and Kauany Sousa would collect three and two shots respectively. In goal, Nicole Panis tallied two saves. With 322 career saves, she is now only six saves away from tying the all-time program record held by Bailey Fontenot.

Like many first halves this season, Big Red fired double-digit shots as they had 12 while holding UIW to zero. LU scored the first goal in the ninth minute as Ramirez deflected a pass from Massey into the net. Big Red had an opportunity to extend their lead as they were able to draw a penalty on the box. But, the penalty kick was saved and the score was still 1-0 LU at the break.

In the second half, LU would put up eight shots, but were unable to capitalize on them. UIW would have ball control in the final moments. With only 57 seconds to go, a shot by UIW was deflected by Panis, who forced a corner kick. On the ensuing set piece attempt, Panis secured LU's win as time ran out for UIW to equalize.

"We are happy to get another conference win, though we made it tougher on ourselves than we needed to," head coach Nathan Kogut explains. "I wish we would've put a couple more of our chances away, but all the credit to UIW for keeping us from getting the second goal. We need to pick ourselves up quickly and prepare for a big game on Sunday against Commerce."

Sunday will feature a SLC Championship rematch as LU will face-off with the Lions of TAMUC. Kickoff begins at 1:00 p.m.
