BEAUMONT, Texas - Riding a 10-match winning streak heading into this week, Lamar University's soccer team returns back to the LU Soccer Complex for two home games this weekend. First up will be UIW at 7:00 pm this Friday night.
The Border is Ours
LU ran their winning streak to 10 games after defeating McNeese 2-1 in Lake Charles. Maddie Janolo and Trinity Clark were the goal scorers while Cariel Ellis assisted on the goal to Clark. Nicole Panis put up six saves in the win.
Four Louisianas Down
The Cardinals won their last four games against the four Louisiana schools in the Southland Conference. In that stretch, the Cardinals outscored Nicholls, Southeastern La., Northwestern State, and McNeese 9-2. To this point, the Cardinals are 6-0-1 against Louisiana schools this season with the one draw being against Grambling.
Third Time at 10
This marks the third time LU has won 10 straight games in their program history. The all-time record for longest winning streak is 12, which the Cardinals achieved in 2017 and 2019. Ironically, the winning streaks in both years extended into the conference championship game, which the Cardinals won both years.
Panis Up The Record Books
With six saves in the last game, Panis now has 320 career saves, which now puts her third all-time in program history. Panis trails all-time leader Bailey Fontenot (2011-14) by eight while she is six back of Jennifer Gibbs (2008-11). Panis was also selected as the SLC Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this season and the fifth time in her career.
History vs. UIW Cardinals
LU last defeated UIW 2-0 on Sep. 17th. Ellis scored her fourth goal of the season while Payton Joost netted her first of the year. Panis made four saves in net as LU extended their winning streak to five and six against UIW. As of the last meeting, LU is 6-0-4 all-time against UIW.
Let's Reintroduce Ourselves to the UIW Cardinals
Since their last meeting, UIW is 5-6-1 overall and 2-4 in the conference. Winning two of their last five games, UIW is led by Sierra Wannamaker, who has three goals. Other players with multiple goals include Addison Rodriguez, Alex Knutson, and Brianna Mata. In nine games in goal Erica Defferding has a goals against average of 0.89 with 40 saves.
Next Up For LU
The Cardinals host Texas A&M-Commerce this Sunday at 1:00 PM in a rematch of last season's conference championship game.
