BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University volleyball team will step on the court Thursday looking to make it two wins in a row as they get ready for a pair of Lions this week. The Cardinals (1-17/1-6 Southland) will host Southeastern Louisiana Thursday before hitting the road for Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday.
The Cardinals are coming off their best match of the season where they traveled to Thibodaux, La., and defeated the Colonels in five sets. Even more impressive is the fact that Lamar spotted Nicholls a 4-0 lead in the fifth set before rallying for the win. In the victory, freshman
Taisha Rhone led Lamar with a team-high 27 kills, while classmate
Lyric Jordan added 21, as the Cardinals picked up their first win of the season.
Southeastern enters the week atop the league standings with a 16-4 overall record and a 7-1 mark in league play. The Lions have also won 10 straight heading into the Thursday showdown. Despite Southeastern's record on the season, the Cardinals have dominated the all-time series. Big Red leads the series 30-12 (.714), which includes a 17-4 (.810) mark in Beaumont. The two teams have split the last six meetings.
Thursday's game will begin at 6 p.m. from McDonald Gym and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Cardinals will hit the road two days later for a trip to Commerce, Texas to face A&M-Commerce. The Lions are currently sixth in the league standings just a win back of Northwestern State with an 8-12 overall record and a 4-3 mark in conference play. Saturday's meeting will be just the fourth all-time between the two schools with A&M-Commerce holding a slim 2-1 lead, which includes a victory in Beaumont earlier this season. Saturday's match is set for a 1 p.m. start and will be televised on ESPN+.
