KINDER, La. - The Southland Conference held their media day for the upcoming 2023-24 women's basketball season at the Coushatta Casino Resort. While there, the preseason all-conference teams and rankings were announced. Lamar University's women's basketball team will enter this season picked to finish third and also have a first-teamer and a second-teamer on the squad.
LU received 132 points and two first place votes to be placed third in the preseason polls. Defending conference champion Southeastern was picked to repeat having claimed 159 points and 15 first place votes. The other three first place votes went to Texas A&M Corpus Christi, who was picked to finish second with 140 points. UIW (4th; 97), Houston Christian (T5th; 74), McNeese (T5th; 74), Northwestern State (7th; 65), Texas A&M-Commerce (8th; 58), New Orleans (9th; 56), and Nicholls (10th; 39) made up the rest of the rankings in that order.
LU's first teamer was
Akasha Davis, who returns for her junior year after a season that saw her lead the team in scoring (14.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.8 rpg), both of which were second in the conference. She earned three SLC player of the week honors with 12 double-doubles and was also selected to both the SLC first team and all-tournament team last season. In addition, Davis was the SLC student-athlete of the year.
The lone second team member for Big Red was
Sabria Dean. She was third on the team with 13.1 ppg and grabbed 3.9 rpg while leading the Cardinals with 53 steals. Dean finished second on the team with 85 assists and earned SLC All-Academic second team honors.
The Cardinals finished 20-12 last season including a 12-6 conference record. Finishing as the number three seed in the SLC tournament, LU would pick up two wins to reach the conference championship game.
LU will open their regular season on November 8th at home vs. Texas College at 6:00 pm.
