STILLWATER, Okla. – Lamar University closed out a tough four-match stretch with a non-conference tilt at Oklahoma State Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals fell to OSU, 7-0. The loss ended a three-day stretch that saw the Red and White play four very tough opponents.
The Cardinals put up a strong fight Sunday in the doubles competition as senior
Filippo Salsini and
Max Amling battled the Cowboys' top duo of Tyler Zink and Alessio Basile down to the wire before finally bowing out at 7-5. It was a similar story at No. 2 doubles where the freshman team of
Gustav Hasslegren and
Elias Peter came down to the end before OSU's Chase Ferguson and Francisco Pini escaped with a 6-4 victory.
Salsini tried to get the Cardinals on the scoreboard at No. 4 singles where he pushed his opponent to a third set. Salsini battled back from an opening-set loss (6-1) to take the second, 6-2. Salsini continued his fight in the third set as it came down to a tiebreak before being decided. In the end Basile was able to get an advantage and never let up taking the match, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (10-8).
The Cards were unable to break through on any of the other courts.
The Cardinals return to action Friday when they travel to Edinburg, Texas to take on UT Rio Grande Valley. The match against the Vaqueros is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
