Islanders Top LU

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – It was a tough night for the Lamar University volleyball team as they dropped a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-22) decision at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tuesday evening. The loss drops Big Red to 6-8 on the season and 0-3 in Southland Conference play.

A much tougher team than the overall record gives them credit for, the Islanders hit .234 on the night (49-17-137) with 69 digs and eight total blocks, while holding LU to a 33-18-131 (.115) performance. Unfortunately for the Red and White, they finished the match with two sets of hitting under .100.

Senior Kaitlyn Gil led the Cardinals with 11 kills but struggled to get into a rhythm with a .093 attack percentage. Junior Amber Johnson and Paige Dugan each just missed double figures with nine kills.

The Islanders managed to jump out to a big lead in the first set and hold on for a nine-point first set win, but after that things got a lot tougher on the homestanding Islanders. Big Red continued to battle and kept things close in the final two sets but couldn't get over the hump dropping a four-point and three-point decision for the final score.

The Cardinals will be back in action Thursday when they host Houston Christian. The match against the Huskies will begin at 6 p.m. from McDonald Gym.
