PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Lamar University watched it's modest three-match win streak go by the boards Wednesday evening dropping a 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-15, 21-25, 15-11) decision at Prairie View A&M. The heartbreaking aspect of the non-conference match was LU battled back from a 2-1 deficit and had chances before the Panthers picked up the win.
Lamar University hit .153 (52-23-189) in a contest that saw the two teams rotate victories in each set. Prairie View ended the night with three more attack errors but landed 13 more attacks on the opposite side of the net (in just three more total attempts than the Cards).
Senior
Kaitlyn Gil was one of two Cardinals in double figures. She ended the night 16 kills (.224 attack percentage) and 12 digs, while sophomore
Paige Dugan added 15 kills and 14 digs. Big Red denied 16 attacks on the night led by junior
Tytiana Johnson's six blocks (Johnson just missed double figures in kills with nine), but PVAMU had an answer recording 20 blocks and nearly 100 digs on the night.
Trailing 12-5 in the fifth set, the Cardinals made a furious rally late scoring six of seven points to trim a seven-point deficit down to just two (13-11), but LU surrendered the serve and was unable to get it back dropping the final two points to close out the match.
The Cardinals will look to start a new win streak Friday when they travel to Arlington, Texas to compete in the UTA Invitational. The two-day four-team tournament will see the Cardinals face Prairie View A&M, New Orleans (non-conference) and UT Arlington.
