Ramirez Homers, Cardinals Drop Regular Season Finale

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University softball dropped the regular season finale against Sam Houston 6-4 Saturday at the LU Softball Complex.

The Cardinals )(11-37, 5-19 in WAC play) held the lead for most of the game, but Sam Houston (15-38, 8-16 in WAC play) scored three runs in the sixth inning to take the lead.

Junior infielder Nicolette Ramirez provided the Cardinals with an early lead, blasting her third home run of the season over the centerfield wall. After sophomore outfielder Hayley Freudenberg walked, sophomore outfielder Audry Fleming pushed Freudenberg up to second with a single. Both sophomores would score when junior catcher Felixia Hinojosa found the left-center power alley for a double.

With a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth, Fleming would belt an RBI triple to right field, bringing home senior outfielder Kaylee Ancelot

Senior pitcher Aaliyah Ruiz received a no-decision after a quality start in which she struck out three batters, moving her career total up to 257. Ruiz is now 12 strikeouts behind Ciara Luna for second place on the LU all-time strikeout list.

LU will now turn its attention to the WAC Tournament. The Cardinals will play their first game of the tournament Wednesday at the Bearkat Softball Complex in Huntsville, Texas.
