Davis Garners WAC Freshman of the Year Honors

| By:

DENVER, Colo. - Throughout this season, no Western Athletic Conference freshman has been as dominant as Akasha Davis. In what was her first season in Cardinal red, and the first season for Lamar University as a WAC program, Davis has been rewarded for her play by being named WAC Freshman of the Year and second-team All-WAC announced league officials Monday afternoon.

The native of Dallas, Texas becomes LU's first All-WAC selection after putting together a remarkable season in which she averaged 12.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.0 steal per game. Davis also finished second in the conference shooting 56.5% from the field. She had four games where she scored more than 20 points, including her season-high 27 against Howard Payne, where she also got 13 rebounds for a double-double, the first of six on the season.

This season also saw Davis rack up five WAC Freshman of the Week honors.

"We are really proud of Kash," said head coach Aqua Franklin. "She has grown so much in a year. She's like a sponge; coach her and she immediately puts it into action. She is a really smart young lady on and off the floor. Her future is so bright, this is only the beginning."

Davis and the Cardinals will begin their WAC Tournament run tomorrow at 4:30 PM as the seventh seed and will tip-off with 10th seed New Mexico State.
